More than 700 people chipped in. We then curated the list into a three-part poem for the musical setting. And we didn't make anything up. Promise.
1. Before I die I want to…
Wake up in Paris, eat pasta in Rome. Do a zip line, a kick line, build my own home.
Be a chef, a grandfather, an artist, a queen. Learn to drywall, to knit, speak Swahili and dream.
Win a Pulitzer, Jeopardy, a decent-sized lottery. Master baking and swimming and throwing some pottery.
Own a farm, a Corvette, rescue dogs, get some chickens. Pet a rhino, giraffe…. HURRY UP, the clock’s ticking!
Climb a mountain a redwood, the local cell tower. Meet Oprah, Obama and speak truth to power.
Learn piano, play drums and electric guitar. Live in Maine or in Spain or someplace less far.
Ride a hot air balloon, an old plane or hang glider. Run a business, a marathon or just a one-miler.
Write a poem, paint my toes and sing in a choir. Or…. P L E A S E . . . just retire!
See the USA, then be on my way
To Australia, Fiji, China or Cuba by RV, safari, on foot or by scuba.
Nice would be nice, and the northern lights
And the parks and the links, and Venice before it sinks.
2. Before I die I want to…
Find my passion, find my purpose, find true inner peace
Find the elixir of love, find the love of my life
Feel free, feel love, feel every bump in the road
Be happy, be present, get married, get even
Make a difference, make the best of it, make myself proud
No regrets, no fears, no debts, no tears.
Live. Live. Live. Live. Live
3. Before I die I want to…
Before I die – can I change someone’s life?
Can I be the solution? The answer? The cure? The change?
Can I heal the world? Help freedom ring?
Can I help end hatred and hunger and homelessness?
Can I teach what I love and live what I teach?
Can I be the kindness I seek?
Be alive with every breath?
